Salt Springs, Ocala National Forest

This is how we (Kevin, Laura, Derek, Ludy and I) begin our year by going on the second annual winter Ocala camping trip, Salt Springs was the destination this time. Salt Springs Recreation Area is one of the recreational jewels of the Ocala National Forest. The recreation area is located in the lush, semi-tropical setting of central Florida. Within the recreation area is a natural spring rising from vertical fissures (cracks) from deep within the earth. The presence of potassium, magnesium and sodium salts give the waters in the spring a slight salinity. Hence the name Salt Springs (the information here was borrowed from http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/ocala/recarea/?recid=32362). This trip also marked our first anniversary as a camping/traveling group and I cannot say it enough how lucky I am to have met this amazing group of people that have become family to me.

Unlike other campgrounds we've stayed at, Salt Springs doesn't have trees and heavy vegetation between campsites, which allowed us (having three sites next to each other) to have a kitchen/eating area away from our tents which is a great idea since bears have been very active in the area.
